Defining Graphic Design

1• What is Graphic Design?
Graphic Design is a type of visual communication, It is used to communicate information to an audience visually and also solve communication problems.

2• What is branding and what are some of it's primary applications?
Branding is a name, logo and/or even colours associated with a group, organisation, company ect, and it’s products, that is recognisable by the audience in identifying the business. Some of it's primary applications are brand conception, brand naming, brand identity, brand strategy, rebranding, digital branding, corporate branding and global branding.

3• What are some Identity Design applications?
Some Identity design applications are logo’s, branding across media, corporate identity and visual identity.

4• What are some applications of Corporate Communication?
Corporate communication applications are essentially any visual communication, including annual reports, booklets, publications, websites, ect.

5• Environmental Design is important to a company and it's employees. Research and report on some companies that have used interesting techniques to design the spaces that their employees and customers utilise.
W.L. Gore & Associates have built a new building titled "The Gore Capabilities Centre" this centre has used environmental design to better the spaces used by employees making the building less corporate. The centre which is also accessible to a wide audience presents complex scientific information in a compelling way, which is useful to the customers and the public. At the New York Botanical Garden there is "The Everett Children’s Adventure Garden". Not only is it a major playground but It is a 12-acre internal and external science museum. here the environmental design is interactive and built purposely for children and adults to learn through the building and its tools to gain information.

6• What are some common examples of good Information Design in Wagga Wagga.
The real estate argents use for sale signs, which are good examples of information design as they clearly state the purpose, the specifications the house and the details of the agent that the audience needs. The cinema has posters of movies which are also good examples of information design as they visually communicate what the movie is called, sometimes what it is about and who is the director, and actor/actress.

7• What is Information or Experience Design? What are some examples of it that you have been impressed by?
Graphic design or advertising for screen based media is called interactive or experience design. I have been impressed by a few Face book for one which is a social networking, YouTube a form of video sharing, and Pop Cap online games.

8• Motion Graphics is the art of screen based visual communication. What are some of the differences between a career in that and traditional Graphic Design?
The major differences between traditional Graphic design and Motion Graphics career wise is that it concentrates more on the digital (screen) side moving web based graphics but also TV, for example screen based visual communication such as videos, a career in video production.

9• What is Promotional Design?
Promotional design is to sell products and services, through the promotion and/or introduction of ideas and events to new or targeted markets.

10• What are you if you develop and design typefaces?
If you develop and design typefaces you are a type designer or typographer.

11• Lettering is what?
Lettering is the drawing, carving or inscribing of letterforms by hand.

12• Are their any companies in Wagga that use Mass Media?
Yes, many, one for example would be Food works, they have TV commercials, catalogues, print advertisements, and radio commercials.

13• What is a demographic?
A demographic is a group of people that has been selected as a target market by their gender, income, socio-economic status, location, age, religion, race, ect.

14• In what disciplines/places do Graphic Designers commonly get jobs?
Design studios, Branding firms, publishers, advertising agencies, marketing companies and self-employed or freelancing are discipline/places where graphic designers commonly get jobs.

15• A Graphic Designer who is just starting their career can benefit from working for someone in what ways?
Experience of being on the job the daily procedures and running business, connections as in working with printers and reps or agents, clients who may give you more work like cash jobs which may lead to freelance work and knowledge, can be gained from working for someone and is very beneficial to a designer who is just starting out.

16• Describe how the process of working with a client is called a 'collaboration'.
When working with a client, or anyone it is called a "collaboration", this is when you work together to come to an end result which has been a contribution by all parties involved (other designers, printers, photographers ect) rather than a solo mission. The process of working with a client, would include, general contact with them to get feedback, keeping them updated and showing them the work before the due time in order to get a result that you but mostly them are happy with. For example they might want a blue box as there logo this would be their collaboration, instead of just giving you a job without any direction.

17• Why does design matter?
Design matters because without design the economy would go down because no one would be attracted or influenced into buying something they don’t need or want. Complex and vital information could not be communicated and it would not be easily accessible to wide audiences.

18• What does the publication 'First Things First' say about urgent worldwide concerns and Graphic Design?
The publication 'First Things First' says that urgent worldwide concerns would benefit from designers using their problem solving skills to improve society. For instance Graphic Designers collaborating to make advertising campaigns that shifts away from consumerism (drink driving, recycling, ect.).

19• In your notes, what is said about Advertising and why it matters?
Advertising matters because it not only promotes competition but also provides choices and information, this is important because it make the products and services better.

20• Why should Graphic Designers have ethical practices?
Graphic Designers should have ethical practices because they influence people, each design can have different benefits and consequences such as economic, social, or moral. Designs also motivate people in doing the right think like recycling and can be a disincentive such as drink driving.
